Zhejiang Ocean University

Zhejiang Ocean University (simplified as ZJOU hereafter) is established by Ministry of Natural Resources and the People’s Government of Zhejiang Province, and it has become one of the key universities in Zhejiang province. ZJOU was founded in 1958, initially named as Zhoushan Fishery College and then in 1975 was renamed as Zhejiang Fishery College. In 1998, Zhejiang Ocean College was established with the combination of Zhejiang Fishery College and Zhoushan Normal College, while the Institute of Zhejiang Marine and Fishery and other units were incorporated into Zhejiang Ocean College after 2000. In 2016, Zhejiang Fishery College was officially named as Zhejiang Ocean University. For more than 60 years, the school has changed its locations several times, while the spirit of ZJOU remains unchanged. Just as the school motto of ZJOU says: Embracing Diversity, Pursuing Excellence. With decades of development, ZJOU has gradually explored the unique way to combine the common law of higher education with the reality of ZJOU itself, which has further highlighted the ocean-oriented features.

ZJOU has been receiving consistent solicitude and full support from the Leadership. President Xi Jinping has visited ZJOU twice and praised highly of the spirit of ZJOU. He stressed that ZJOU should persist in running school on the islands to serve the local economy with ZJOU’s own features.

Covering an area of more than 2608 Mu and another sea use area of 720 Mu, with 53.4㎡ of schoolhouse, 1.9 million books and facilities that value 480 million yuan, the university has 10 schools, 1independent school, 2 teaching units and 2 interdisciplinary research institutions. With 12,119 full-time students （excluding over 5400 full-time students in the independent school）and 1189 faculty members, among which 846 are full-time teachers, ZJOU has built 4 state-level and 27 provincial research platforms. Besides, Xixuan Fishery Silicon Island and 2 scientific expedition vessels belong to ZJOU. ZJOU has its own publication: Journal of Zhejiang Ocean University, and the branch of National Ocean Press in ZJOU.

Currently, as the “Strategy to Build up a Strong Oceanic Power” is being fully implemented in China, taking the chance both of the establishment of marine silk-road and of the construction of Zhoushan Archipelago New Area, Zhejiang Ocean University, adhering to connotation-oriented development principle, collaborative innovation, and international cooperation of education and Sci-tech, is optimizing management, developing its own features, strengthening advantages, promoting teaching and research quality, assisting the development of professional marine talents, R&D platform for marine science and technology, and incubator of marine high-tech industries, a talent-importing facility for marine experts and a vital center for Chinese oceanic culture and social science research in the ECS area,assisting in cultivating talented personnel for China’s marine industry who possess the pioneering characters.
